Rosenstrasse

It came recommended to me by a German acquaintance. I had never even heard of it, which surprised me because I watch the distribution of German Films in the US pretty closely and I wasn't that busy in 2003. I should have heard of it. Anyways, after seeing it I know why I hadn't. It was..... interesting-- a new war story I wasn't familiar with. Aryan-Jewish marriages during WWII and how a group of women waited it out outside of a detention center for Jews in Berlin in none other than Rosenstrasse. That's the name of the street for diejenigen die kein Deutsch koennen. Uberall it was an "A" for effort. I applaud the acting of Lena Fischer's brother and the actress that played the young Ruth. Oh and I dare not forget the hubsch Fabian Israel Fischer. The actor who played that role can star in my fiilm.

Margarethe von Trotte, the director, who also wrote the script, is famous as most of us know. I like her film die Bleierne Zeit(1981), aka Marianne und Julianne, about the two sister in the later 60s. One was the extreme feminist who decided to try to change the status quo within the system through journalism and the other one who just couldn't quite deal and became an extremist/terrorist. That said it was quite a Debbi Downer film. To me though more interesting than Rosenstrasse.

Funny, I just checked IMDB and Jutta Lampe, the actress who plays Ruth in Rosenstrasse I realize was also one of the sisters in Bleierne. I guess even German directors like to stick to their faves when casting. If you are a German film buff, you will know Jutta by her Voigt/Jolie-esque lips.
